Historic Narrative

A water privilege since the mid-late 17th century, a sawmill was established to supply Connecticut River shipyards. By 1758, the business was owned by several generations of the Southworth family. The Deep River Lumber Co. purchased it in 1867, employing twenty men in 1885. According to town historian Rich Kalapos, the mill retains its mid-19th century gearing.
